Cyclone Remal made landfall between the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts on Sunday night with winds of 135 kilometers per hour (kmph), causing extensive damage and disruption in nearby regions.

The severe cyclonic storm is continuing to move northwards and is expected to weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm by Monday morning.

Coastal areas of West Bengal and North Odisha experienced gale-force winds of 100-110 kmph, while winds in Kolkata, Howrah, Hoogly, and East Medinipur reached 45-55 kmph with gusts up to 65 kmph.

The West Bengal government evacuated around 110,000 people from coastal areas to cyclone shelters, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 14 teams across nine districts.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting on Sunday to assess the readiness for Cyclone Remal and directed that additional NDRF teams be on standby for rapid deployment.

Heavy rainfall is expected to persist over coastal West Bengal and eastern districts near Bangladesh until Monday, with light to moderate rainfall anticipated in most areas on Monday and Tuesday.

Fishermen have been advised to stay out of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea until Monday, and those already at sea have been urged to return to shore.

The Tripura government has issued a red alert for four districts in response to the severe cyclonic storm, and the state and district administrations are fully prepared to handle the cyclone's impact.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is monitoring the situation and providing regular updates.

The cyclone is expected to continue moving north-northeastwards and weaken gradually over the next 24 hours.
