Two brothers from Haryana have been arrested in Australia for the fatal stabbing of a 22-year-old Indian student, Navjeet Sandhu. The incident took place in the Melbourne suburb of Ormond on Sunday.
The accused, Abhijeet and Robin Gartan, were arrested in New South Wales's Goulburn on Tuesday. The victim and the accused were both residents of Haryana's Karnal.
According to the victim's uncle, Sandhu was stabbed in the chest while trying to mediate in a confrontation between a group of Indian students over a rent-related dispute.
Sandhu's friend, another Indian student, had asked him to accompany him to his house to pick up his belongings. While his friend went inside, Sandhu heard some shouting and saw there was a fight.
When Sandhu tried to intervene, he was fatally stabbed in the chest with a knife.
Sandhu was a brilliant student and was to join his family in July for vacations. He had moved to Australia on a student visa one-and-a-half years ago, and his father had sold one-and-half acres of their land to fund his education.
The Victoria Police had earlier released details and images of the two brothers they were searching for in connection with the stabbing incident.
Abhijeet is 26 years old and was described as being 170cm tall with a solid build and black hair. Robin is 27 years old and was also described as being 170cm tall with a solid build and black hair.
