The scorching heat in Uttar Pradesh has claimed the lives of at least 15 polling staff, prompting the state's Chief Electoral Officer, Navdeep Rinwa, to issue instructions to district authorities to make necessary arrangements at all polling stations to protect the personnel and voters from the intense heat.
The Mirzapur district has been particularly hard-hit, with 13 poll personnel succumbing to heat-related conditions, including high fever and high blood pressure. An additional 23 personnel were admitted to the hospital for treatment.
In the Sonbhadra district, two more people on election duty died, and nine others fell ill due to suspected heat stroke. The Chief Electoral Officer has directed all district authorities to ensure that adequate measures are in place to prevent further casualties. These measures include providing polling staff with adequate water, shade, and medical facilities.
